How to make study-schedule for part 2 FRCPath Microbiology
(Experience of a successful trainee - Autumn 2023)
I divided it into bacteriology/antimicrobial/clinical/ Viro/ IPC/ fungi/parasite
As it’s always easier to prepare in that way.
For bacteria - SMIs, especially tables at the back, covering all media, especially for faecal samples - how colonies of salmonella/shigella look like on CLD/DCA
Biochemical tests - I am sure we do know them already, but revise catalase/coagulase/oxidase/Indole/citrate/TSI can be found in SMI or any basic micro book.
Simple things like oxidase/urease positives. All basic bacteria gram stain/cat/coagulase/ any special media/ any special test
Clostridium sSMI are really important.
Some others, like GPRs actinomycete/Nocardia.
Lab management like
Category 3/2 lab to differentiate
Hazard groups
Antibiotics resistance mechanisms, CPEs-PHE and EUCAST documents
Alternative methods to test
Gentamicin- dosing
Newer antibiotics-
Clinica l- all bacteria with PHE actions are important
Shigella/salmonella/Ecoli O157/Hinfluenzae/C diphtheriae and C ulcerans
Clinical- Meningitis/GAS/Pertussis/Syphilis/endocarditis/PJI study as you are the infectious disease doctor.
Virology- serology tables from SMIs hepatitis, EBV
BBV/ needle stick injury
BHIVA and BASSH guidelines to refer
Fungus- IDSA candida, aspergillus, Oxford book
IPC-HTMs ventilation 03-01 new, legionella, pseudo in water, endoscope
Outbreak management
Critical appraisal is gone, but examiners can ask in the general question category.
I had read cases in Medical Microbiology and infection disease books & Damani for infection control.
Green book vaccinations
