{"id":443,"date":"2023-09-16T22:07:02","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T21:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/?p=443"},"modified":"2023-09-16T22:07:02","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T21:07:02","slug":"aspergillus-niger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/?p=443","title":{"rendered":"Aspergillus niger"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-fungus\"><strong>The Fungus:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aspergillus niger is one of Aspergillus\u2019 four species known to cause invasive disease in humans (others being A fumigatus, A flavus and A terreus).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, it is possibly the least common among the four. FDA classed it safe [GRAS] for industrial use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In nature, it is found on soils, plants, food and spices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-identification\"><strong>Identification:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It initially forms white colonies with a yellow back, which quickly becomes black. Conidia is rough, brownish-black, biseriate, and covers the entire vesicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key feature in diagnosing&nbsp;<em>A. niger<\/em>&nbsp;infection is the presence of calcium oxalate crystals on pathological examination. The presence of crystals can be taken as an indication of A niger infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-virulence-factor\"><strong>Virulence factor:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Toxin \u2013 malformin C, ochratoxin&nbsp;<em>A<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-infection\"><strong>Infection:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is the commonest cause of otomycosis \u2013 colonising the ear canal, appearing as a black tuft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cutaneous infection [Loudon, 1996].<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pulmonary infection and invasive aspergillosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-treatment\"><strong>Treatment:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Otomycosis<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cleaning and topical antifungals (clotrimazole, miconazole).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe infection may need oral antifungals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Invasive diseases may need IV antifungal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Invasive aspergillosis<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Voriconazole or isavuconazole +\/- Echinocandin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amphotericin B preparations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Non-medical use<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aspergillus niger has much non-medical use \u2013 production of citric acid, waste management, and biotransformation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fungus: Identification: It initially forms white colonies with a yellow back, which quickly becomes black.
