however, it is pleomorphic and could appear in coccobacillary form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is non-motile, non-spore-forming and encapsulated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a member of the oral, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary flora.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pathogenicity:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adherence \u2013 lectin-like protein, pilli<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to aggregate RBC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid phagocytosis \u2013 extracellular polysaccharide or slime layer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cell wall lipopolysaccharide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Culture and identification:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Slow-growing, small pin-point colony with a bleach-like smell.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is yellow-grey with a small greenish discolouration on the blood agar. 50% of colonies are pitting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can grow aerobically or anaerobically.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It usually requires hemin (X factor) and carbon dioxide for primary isolation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oxidase positive, catalase-negative (some weakly positive), urease negative, indole negative, reduce nitrate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>API20E , (API20NE with additional test)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MALDI ToF<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img abscess<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chorioamnionitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infection after human bite wounds (\u201cclenched-fist injuries\u201d) etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skin infection in IVDUs (skin poppers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Points to remember<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a member of the HACEK group of organisms and can cause endocarditis (especially in IVDUs or prosthetic valves)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most infections are polymicrobial.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The patient often has comorbidities like mental retardation with cerebral palsy,&nbsp; head and neck malignancies, Down\u2019s syndrome, diabetes, leukaemia, or trauma history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surgical intervention is often required for a successful outcome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eikenella corrodens is usually susceptible to:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Penicillin, amoxicillin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-generation cephalosporins \u2013 variable susceptibility, reported resistance to cephalexin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second and third-generation cephalosporins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Betalactam-beta-lactamase combination \u2013 coamoxiclav and pip-tazobactam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tetracyclines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluoroquinolones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cotrimoxazole<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Non-susceptible to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clindamycin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Macrolides \u2013 erythromycin, clarithromycin etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aminoglycosides \u2013 gentamicin, amikacin
