Automated systems may not have all the species in the database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clinical presentation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><em>Aerococcus viridans<\/em><\/td><td>Environmental organism \u2013 found in soil and air.<br>A rare cause of human disease.<br>Reported to cause&nbsp;<br>\u2013 urinary tract infection (UTI),<br>\u2013 bacteraemia,<br>\u2013 endocarditis and<br>\u2013 meningitis<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>Aerococcus urinae<\/em><\/td><td>\u2013 UTI,&nbsp;<br>\u2013 bacteremia\/septicaemia,<br>\u2013 infective endocarditis.<br>Rarely \u2013<br>\u2013 pyelonephritis,<br>\u2013 septic arthritis,<br>\u2013 discitis,<br>\u2013 PD peritonitis,<br>\u2013 skin and soft tissue infection has been reported.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>Aerococcus&nbsp;sanguinicola<\/em><\/td><td>\u2013 UTI,&nbsp;<br>\u2013 bacteremia\/septicaemia,<br>\u2013 infective endocarditis<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>Aerococcus<\/em>&nbsp;<em>christensenii<\/em><\/td><td>Isolated from the vaginal specimen. ?Bacterial vaginosis<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>A<\/em>erococcus&nbsp;<em>urinae hominis<\/em><\/td><td>Isolated from urine<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Aerococcus urinae<\/em><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>A urinae<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;is known to cause<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UTI in elderly (median age 75 y; F&gt;M) people with comorbidities (Diabetes Mellitus, malignancy, prostatitis, indwelling catheter etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bacteraemia (mostly as a complication of&nbsp; UTI),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>endocarditis (a complication of bacteraemia \u2013 1\/3rd of bacteraemia cases; poor prognosis)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and rarely other infections (see chart above).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The prevalence of these bacteria in the urine is 0.3-4%.<br><em>A urinae<\/em>&nbsp;is often seen in mixed-blood culture with \u2013&nbsp;<em>St aureus, E coli, Actinobaculum schaalii<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sensitivity and treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A urinae is reported to be susceptible to \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Beta-lactams<\/strong><\/td><td>It has been reported that Aerococcus urinae is cotrimoxazole resistant. However, Aerococcus urinae can extract folate from the environment like Enterococcus using a&nbsp;high-affinity folate transport binding protein FolT. The thymidine or folate-containing culture media used to test the susceptibility may alter the result. In vivo, the concentration of folate in the urine may depend upon the folate intake.
