{"id":319,"date":"2023-09-16T22:11:58","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T21:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/?p=319"},"modified":"2023-09-16T22:11:59","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T21:11:59","slug":"plesiomonas-shigelloides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/?p=319","title":{"rendered":"Plesiomonas shigelloides"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plesiomonas shigelloides characteristics<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Plesiomonas shigelloides is a gram-negative bacillus that derived its name from the ancient Greek word&nbsp;<em>pl\u0113s\u00edon<\/em>,&nbsp; which means \u201cnear\u201d or \u201cneighbour\u201d, as it was considered near or related to the bacteria Aeromonas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is mostly found in freshwater, estuarine, or brackish water environments. It can be found in animals living in these environments, like fish, shrimp, shellfish, amphibians, reptiles, and vertebrates. It is mostly found in tropical waters but is increasingly reported in colder countries, especially in warmer months. It could also be found in seawater (and saltwater animals) in warmer temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"649\" height=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-6.png 649w, https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-6-300x39.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do we get Plesiomonas shigelloides infection?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Most cases are associated with the consumption of raw or poorly prepared seafood, especially shellfish. Other types of contaminated foods, like chicken, could also be a source. It has also been reported to occur from the consumption of contaminated water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"385\" height=\"114\" src=\"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-7.png 385w, https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-7-300x89.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plesiomonas shigelloides symptoms<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diarrhoea<\/strong>: Plesiomonas has been associated with diarrhoea, which could be<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><em>1. Mild self-limiting watery diarrhoea (most common),<\/em><br><em>2. Severe bloody diarrhoea\/ dysenteric&nbsp;<\/em><strong>colitis<\/strong><em>.<\/em><br><em>3. Chronic diarrhoea (&gt;14 days duration)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"382\" height=\"79\" src=\"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-8.png 382w, https:\/\/microregistrar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-8-300x62.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Diarrhoea could be associated with abdominal pain, fever and vomiting. It is one of the commonest causes of travellers\u2019 diarrhoea. Diarrhoea may last from 3 to 40 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large number of Plesiomonas infections ( ~30%) are co-infection with other pathogens like rotavirus, Salmonella, Aeromonas, Vibrio parahaemolyticus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Extraintestinal infection:&nbsp;<\/strong>Infections like sepsis and meningitis are usually seen in children or in immunocompromised people. Other infections rarely associated with this bacteria are \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>osteomyelitis, septic arthritis,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>endophthalmitis,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, pan\u00adcreatic and splenic abscess, cholecystitis,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cellulitis,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>epididymo-orchitis, salpingitis and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pneumonia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Association or risk factors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diarrhoea \u2013 Consumption of uncooked\/undercooked seafood, especially shellfish, travel to south\/southeast Asia, HIV, Children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extraintestinal disease \u2013 Old age, underlying biliary disease, immunocompromised state (HIV, cancer), blood dyscrasia (sickle cell disease, thalassemia)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Virulence factors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cytotoxic hemolysin,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>iron acquisition systems, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lipopolysaccharide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plesimonas shigelloides laboratory identification<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Gram stain: short Gram-negative rod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is facultatively anaerobic, non\u2013spore-forming, motile (polar flagella) bacilli.<br>On blood agar, it produces large grey, opaque, and convex, \u03b2-haemolytic colonies.<br>On Inositol Brilliant Green Bile Agar \u2013 pink colonies<br>MacConkey agar \u2013 Non-lactose fermenting colonies.<br>Salmonella-Shigella agar may be inhibitory for some strains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plesiomonas shigelloides biochemical tests &amp; other tests<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>It is catalase-positive, oxidase-positive, and indole-positive. It does not ferment lactose but could be variable.
