Interpret this hepatitis B result

HBsAg -ve
Anti-HBc (total) +ve
Anti-HBc IgM +ve
HBsAb -ve
HBeAg-ve
HBeAb -ve
Patient is being investigated for fulminant hepatitis.

Suggests relatively recent, resolving, infection with hepatitis B.

In presence of fulminant hepatitis the massive immune response may clear the virus rapidly - making HBsAg negative. It is a possibility we need to consider in presence of compatible clinical picture. In the UK we follow UK SMI.
